Our Edmonton dentists can help diagnose and treat jaw pain or tightness caused by Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD).
Tempromandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) is a disorder of the joints in the jaw that may cause symptoms like jaw pain, severe headaches and ringing in the ears. If left untreated, TMD can also lead to loose teeth and eroded jawbones.
The temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk and eat.
TMD occurs when there are issues with this joint, the most common cause being misalignment of the teeth or jaw. There are also some other factors that may contribute to the disorder, including skull shape, genetics, airway issues or trauma to the jaw.
Once your dentist tests for and diagnoses you with TMD, they will offer you a plan to treat its underlying causes.
Treatment may include wearing a night guard and relaxation techniques. Your dentist may also suggest a TENS machine, a device that encourages the face and jaw muscles to relax.
Common symptoms of TMD include:
TMD symptoms can worsen during stressful times and intense outbreaks may cause symptoms such as dizziness and neck pain. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your dentist for a proper diagnosis.
