Wisdom teeth, which can begin erupting anywhere between the ages of 17 and 25, often need to be removed by an Edmonton dentist when they become compacted or infected. Wisdom teeth extraction is also often performed in order to prevent these issues from occurring in the future, even if the patient isn't currently experiencing any pain or discomfort. At the Azarko Dental Group Edmonton dental clinic, we make sure that our patients are well prepared for their procedure so that their recovery goes as quickly and smoothly as possible. Here are some tips that you can use.
- Go grocery shopping and pick up prescriptions ahead of time
Your first step in preparing for wisdom teeth surgery is to pick up any painkillers or antibiotics which your Edmonton dentist has prescribed. While you wait for your prescription to be filled, you should also go shopping for some easy-to-eat foods to have while you recover. In the first few days after wisdom teeth surgery, you should limit yourself to foods such as smoothies, pudding, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, eggs, beans, and soft canned fruit. - Have ice packs ready
If you don't already have ice packs at home, then pick some up while you grocery shop as well. Have them frozen and ready to go once you come back home after your surgery. In order to help control pain and bring down swelling, hold an ice pack to the area for 20 minutes at a time. - Bite down on damp tea bags
If it takes a little while for the bleeding to subside, then try switching from biting down on gauze to biting down on damp tea bags. Tea contains tannins, which can help to promote blood clotting and which can provide some pain relief as well. - Take care when cleaning your teeth and mouth
About 12 hours after your surgery you can gently brush your teeth as long as you are careful to avoid the extraction sites. You can also rinse your mouth out with some salt water or with a diluted mouth wash, but take care not to rinse too vigorously. Continue rinsing several times a day for the first few days following surgery. - Get plenty of rest
Finally, give yourself time to rest and relax after wisdom tooth surgery. Avoid strenuous exercises and simply sit back, prop yourself up on some pillows, and watch your favourite show or read a good book.
