Our Edmonton dentists may place a dental implant as part of the process to replace a missing tooth.
A dental implant is a small titanium anchor used to replace missing or failing teeth. Surgically placed into the jaw bone, it functions like the root of a missing tooth and can support a tooth replacement.
Dental implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth to address a number of oral health issues, including to:
Like any dental restoration, dental implants require diligent oral hygiene and proper care to ensure they last a long time.
A dental implant is made up of two pieces: a titanium rod that is placed into the jaw bone and functions like the root of the tooth, and an abutment that screws into the rod. The implant, when combined a tooth replacement, looks and act like a natural tooth.
To begin, your dentist will surgically place the titanium rod into your jaw bone beneath the gum tissue. Once the implant is placed, the gum tissue is stitched back together. As the tissue heals, the implant will bond with the jaw bone and attach to the gum.
Once the gums have fully healed, your dentist will attach the abutment to the rod. A tooth replacement will then be attached to the abutment to create the look and function of a natural tooth.
In some situations, you may require a bone graft or sinus lift to strengthen your jaw bone before receiving a dental implant.
